Hidden among the eucalypts

Tanglewood Estate lies deep in the hinterland above Dromana — more than a hundred acres of old eucalypts and native bush, six acres of vines, a country garden and a still dam, with Port Phillip Bay showing through the trees. The estate is yours alone for the day, and each of its three buildings holds a farewell differently: the chapel for something small and classic, the barn when the whole community is coming, the winery for everything in between. Guests follow the drive in beneath the gums, and from there the day never needs to leave the property — the service, the refreshments and the quiet in between all happen here.

The Barn

The largest room on the estate — a great timber barn raised from recycled timbers, with high raftered ceilings and wide doors that slide open to the vines. It seats over 350, and holds a big farewell the way few places on the Peninsula can: grand in scale, never formal.

The Chapel

An original country church, more than a century old, restored and given a new life for services of every faith and none. Arched windows, timber pews and bushland light make it an intimate, classic setting — around 90 seated, with standing room behind.

The Winery

The old working heart of the estate, renovated with its high rustic ceilings intact. The main room takes a service of around 120, the adjoining room takes the refreshments, and the timber deck beyond looks over the still dam to the bay. Many families simply hold the whole day here.

The grounds

Old gums, six acres of vines, a country garden and the dam with its timber jetty. Between the buildings there is room to arrive slowly, take the air, and stand a while under the trees.
