One year ago, Candour began with a simple belief — that funeral care could feel more human, more transparent, and more connected to the people it serves.
This past month, we gathered with the people who helped bring that belief to life.
Not just to celebrate a milestone, but to share something deeper.
A feeling.
A possibility.
A different way of approaching farewell.
This wasn’t just a celebration — it was a glimpse into what a funeral can truly feel like.
An evening grounded in meaning
The night began with a Welcome to Country from Uncle Josh West, a proud Bunurong/Palawa man.
His words grounded the space in something deeper — connection to land, to history, and to each other.
He spoke of respect, of walking softly on Country, and of the importance of sharing stories across generations and communities.
It set the tone for the evening beautifully. Not as an event for event’s sake, but as a gathering with purpose, held in respect and shaped by connection.
We gather in respect, in connection, and in celebration — walking together.
Music, emotion, and presence
As guests settled into the space, Marina’s voice carried across the room — still, powerful, and deeply moving.
Music has always been central to how we approach a service. Not as background, but as something that holds a moment. Something that allows people to pause, to feel, and to remember.
It can shift the mood of a room, create space for reflection, and gently carry people through moments that words alone cannot always hold.
Music doesn’t sit in the background — it holds the moment.
Why Candour exists
Throughout the evening, we shared the story behind Candour — how it came to life, and why it matters.
Candour was built on the belief that people deserve better support when someone they love dies.
Too often, families are asked to make significant decisions in moments of shock and grief, within systems that do not always offer the clarity, transparency, or care they need.
We believed there was a better way.
A way built on empathy.
A way grounded in transparency.
A way that leads with courage.
A way that reflects the importance of sustainability and thoughtful choices.
Above all, a way that puts people at the centre of every decision.
In moments of grief, people deserve clarity, care, and space — not confusion.
What a funeral can feel like
This evening was not simply a celebration of Candour.
It was also a demonstration of what we believe a modern funeral or celebration of life can be.
A space filled with warmth and conversation.
Beautifully considered details.
Food and drink shared with ease.
Music that moved through the evening with purpose.
A setting that invited people to gather, reflect, and genuinely connect.
There was laughter. There were meaningful conversations. People met others they had not known before and found themselves sharing stories, memories, and a sense of common ground.
Because at its best, a funeral is not only about loss.
It is about honouring a life in a way that feels true to the person being remembered — and supportive of the people left behind.
A funeral doesn’t have to feel heavy — it can feel warm, connected, and deeply human.
The people behind it all
Candour has never been built in isolation.
It has been shaped by the support, generosity, trust, and encouragement of so many people around us — including our families, our suppliers, our collaborators, and the wider community that has believed in what we are building.
On the night, that support was visible everywhere.
In the care of those who helped bring the space together.
In the beauty of the florals and styling.
In the warmth of the food and hospitality.
In the music, the conversation, and the willingness of people to show up for us.
Every person who contributes to Candour helps shape the experience we are able to create for others.
Candour has never been built by just us — it has been built by all of you.
A film that says more than words can
One of the most meaningful parts of the evening was the film we shared with everyone in the room.
Beautifully shot and thoughtfully brought together, it captures Candour’s first year through the voices of the people who know it from different sides — our founders, collaborators, suppliers, families, and community. More than a recap, it reveals the values underneath the work: the desire to create extraordinary experiences, to be transparent in an industry that can feel opaque, to care for people without rushing them, and to leave the world in a better place than we found it.
What comes through so clearly in the film is that Candour is not built on a formula. It is built on listening, on guiding people sincerely, on tailoring each farewell, and on doing the unseen work of care well. It speaks to the balance that matters so much to us — holding the heaviness of loss while still making room for lightness, warmth, and something truly personal.
If you would like to understand what Candour stands for — not just in words, but in feeling — this is the piece we would most encourage you to watch.
“What care means is what you do when no one’s watching.”
“The importance of being human centred cannot be overstated.”
A moment to mark the journey
One of the most meaningful parts of the evening invited guests to physically leave their mark.
By tracing their hands and adding their names, everyone contributed to a collective reflection of the people who have supported Candour from the very beginning.
It was simple, generous, and deeply moving.
A visual reminder that Candour is more than a business. It is something built by many hands, many conversations, and many acts of belief.
That sense of community has shaped who we are from the start, and it continues to shape where we are headed.
Looking ahead
As we move into our second year, our focus remains the same.
To continue redefining funeral care.
To support families with clarity and compassion.
To create services that feel deeply personal and beautifully considered.
And to keep building something that reflects the people it serves.
We are proud of what Candour has become in its first year, but even more than that, we are excited by what is still to come.
As the film says, what excites Candour most about the future is that it has one — and that it looks bright.
To everyone who has supported us — thank you.
Thank you for believing in us.
Thank you for walking alongside us.
And thank you for helping us build something that feels meaningful, thoughtful, and full of heart.
With care,
Simon & Sameiko
