Two Candour funeral arrangers talking with a family at a kitchen bench over cups of tea
Choosing a farewell

Every farewell we hold, side by side with every price in the open — and nothing decided until we're sitting down together.

We come to you, any hour, anywhere in Melbourne. Tonight, nothing else needs deciding.

Begin at planning ahead
Step one

What shape should the day take?

This is the only question that really divides things, and most families can answer it straight away. Everything after it is about how the day is held, not whether.

Mourners seated in a garden courtyard for a funeral service, with a white coffin and floral spray at the front

A funeral, with them there

From $8,374 inc GST

The shape most families picture. Everyone together on one day, the coffin present, the service and the farewell in the same few hours. It ends with a cremation or a burial, and that is the one other choice we'll ask you to make early.

Held as Simple, Celebrated or Concierge — the three experiences in step two.

A welcome table with guest book and order of service booklets set before a memorial

A memorial, held later

From $8,879 inc GST

The gathering happens when everyone can be there — a fortnight on, or a season. They aren't in the room; their photograph is, and their ashes too if you'd like them. It suits families spread across states, and families who would rather grieve first and gather when they're ready.

Held as Simple, Celebrated or Concierge — and it works whether we carry the cremation first or it has already happened elsewhere.

A handmade timber box with nameplate, in which ashes are returned home

An unattended cremation

From $5,383 inc GST

No service, and nobody needing to be anywhere. They are bathed, dressed and cared for by our own team, and the cremation takes place quietly at a Victorian memorial park. Their ashes come home to you by hand, in a handmade timber box carrying their nameplate.

A gathering can still come later. Many families choose this now and hold a memorial weeks or months on, when everyone can be there.

Open ocean seen from the deck of a vessel, hours off the Victorian coast

A burial at sea

From $35,000 inc GST

The person themselves, unembalmed and in a natural shroud, committed to open ocean three thousand metres down. The first full-body sea burial in Victoria in more than a decade was ours to carry. It is the one farewell on this page that cannot be arranged after someone dies — the federal permit needs their own wish, in writing.

Not the same as scattering ashes at sea, which needs no permit and which we arrange as part of any farewell above.

Still not sure? Call 1300 788 881, any hour. We'll ask three or four gentle questions and tell you plainly which one fits. Most families ring before they've decided anything at all.

What never changes.

Whichever shape you choose, and whichever experience, this is the care underneath it. None of it is an upgrade and none of it is a tier. It is simply how we look after someone.

Step two

How the day is held.

A funeral and a memorial are each held within one of three experiences — the Simple Farewell, the Celebrated Farewell or the Concierge Farewell. They differ in where the day happens, how much choice is put in front of you, and how much we carry. The care in the band above is identical in all three.

A chapel farewell at a memorial park

Simple Farewell

The whole day in one gentle place. A chapel at a trusted memorial park, the farewell, and refreshments a short walk apart — with fewer decisions along the way.

$9,429 the complete package, inc GST · coffin and flowers chosen at arrangement
A farewell held at a venue on the Mornington Peninsula

Celebrated Farewell

Somewhere that was theirs. A sailing club, a garden, an estate — yours for the day, with the gathering afterwards flowing straight on in the same place.

$12,029 the complete package, inc GST · venue hire passed on at cost
A fully produced farewell at a private venue

Concierge Farewell

Anywhere you can imagine, produced by one senior hand. Every detail anticipated, so your only job on the day is to be present.

$20,309 the complete package, inc GST · most families arrive at around $30,000 once everything is chosen

Compare Simple Celebrated Concierge
Where is the day held? A chapel at one of six memorial parks. A venue you choose, from more than forty. Anywhere at all — a winery, a home, a coastline.
How much is there to choose from? A short list, with a clear favourite. A longer list, across every element. Everything, plus what’s kept for Concierge.
Who leads the service? A celebrant matched to your family. A celebrant or clergy, matched to your family. Either — or coaching, if you’d rather lead it.
Photographs, music and screen? A tribute to music, on the chapel’s screen. The same, with full sound and your own playlist. A custom film, live musicians and a live stream.
Where does everyone go afterwards? Refreshments in the same grounds. Catering in the same place, straight on. The full menu, or your own caterer.
How do you travel? Hearse. Hearse, and a family car if you’d like one. As many vehicles as the day asks for.
Who is beside you? One arranger, and our team on the day. One senior arranger, holding every supplier. One senior director, first call to last guest.

What usually decides it.

Families rarely arrive knowing. In practice, one of these is normally the thing that settles it.

  • If the family is scattered across states or overseas

A memorial — a private cremation now, and the gathering when everyone can land. Nothing is rushed, and no one misses it.

  • If you'd rather make fewer decisions

Simple. The whole day sits in one place, the choices come curated with a clear favourite, and there is no convoy to organise.

  • If there's a place that was theirs

Celebrated. The sailing club, the garden, the clubhouse that held every milestone — yours for the day.

  • If you'd rather not carry any of it

Concierge. One senior hand, every detail anticipated, and your only job is to be present.

  • If they asked for no fuss

An unattended cremation. When a family chooses no ceremony, the care we give their person becomes the whole of the service, so we make it exceptional.

  • If a funeral already happened and it wasn't enough

A memorial, whenever you're ready — an anniversary, a scattering with the words said properly, a gathering for the friends who couldn't come. There is no expiry on remembering someone.

You don't have to be right today.

Families move between these all the time. A Simple becomes a Celebrated when a venue finally comes to mind. A funeral becomes a memorial when a brother can't fly in until May. Nothing is locked until it is booked, and we will tell you plainly what any change costs before you make it.

If this page hasn't settled it, the conversation will. That is what the first call is for.

Questions families ask us.

We don't know which one we want yet. Can we still call?
Yes, and most families do. You do not need to have read this page, or decided anything, or have a figure in mind. Ring us and we will bring your person into our care first, then work the rest out with you over the days that follow.
Is one of these the "proper" funeral?
No. A quiet unattended cremation and a fully produced Concierge farewell receive exactly the same care from us — the difference is how much of a day is built around it, and where. The right one is the one that suits your family and what they would have wanted, and that is a different answer in every house.
Is there anything simpler than Simple?
Two things. An unattended cremation, from $5,383, where there is no service at all. And for a burial, a graveside service, where the whole farewell is held at the grave with no chapel beforehand, from $5,824. Both are published, both are on our price list, and neither is hidden from you.
Can we hold a memorial after an unattended cremation?
Yes, and many families do exactly that. The cremation happens quietly now, and the gathering comes weeks or months later when everyone can be there. It is one of the most common paths we arrange, and nothing about choosing the cremation first closes the door on it. See memorial services →
Does the price change if we choose cremation or burial?
Yes. A burial package is a little less than a cremation package because there is no cremation fee inside it. But a cemetery charges its own plot and interment fees on top, and those vary a great deal between parks. We pass them through at exactly the cemetery's price and walk you through your park's exact figures before anything is confirmed.
What if we've already spoken to another funeral director?
Nothing is lost. If a cremation or burial has already happened, with another director or interstate or overseas, we can still arrange the gathering. Bring the ashes, or just the story, and we take it from there.
How long do we have to decide?
Longer than most people think. Once your person is in our care, there is no clock running. The only early choice is cremation or burial, because it shapes what we book. Everything else can wait until you are sitting down with your arranger, and a memorial can be held whenever your family is ready.

Thinking ahead, not in the moment?

Many people work through this same page quietly, in their own time — choosing their own shape and experience, recording their wishes so family never has to guess, or prepaying at today's price so it is simply done. There is no appointment needed to begin, and no pressure once you have.

We're here, whenever you need us.

Day or night, every day of the year. Tell us a little about the person you're remembering, and we will take it from there — with no agenda, and no obligation at all.
