The days we create

Most families arrive without an idea in their head. That is exactly the right place to start.

Every farewell on this page began with a conversation about one person — what they did on Saturdays, what they always said, what they loved to eat. The day was built from there. Four of them were created for particular families. The rest are the shapes we arrange most weeks, and they are no less personal for it.

From a Simple Farewell at a cemetery chapel to a Concierge Farewell anywhere you choose.

A timber coffin dressed with native flowers on a boat deck, family aboard and a line in the water

A Concierge Farewell · A boat, and a wharf

One last fishing trip

He was happiest with a line in the water, so his family took him out on the bay one more time, a rod over the side. When the boat came back to the wharf, the scallops were already on.

Mourners leaving a modern cemetery chapel through timber doors into morning light

A Simple Farewell · Cemetery chapels across Melbourne

A morning at the chapel

The service, the committal and tea in the lounge afterwards — one place, one morning, and nothing to organise in between. For families who want the traditional thing done properly.

A hearse and family car on a final lap of Sandown while hundreds watch from the rail

A Concierge Farewell · Sandown

A last lap at Sandown

He had spent every weekend of his life at the track. The service ended the only way it could have: one more lap of the circuit, with everyone standing to watch him go round.

A graveside farewell on a Melbourne lawn cemetery, mourners seated around a white casket beneath a eucalypt

A Simple Farewell · Lawn cemeteries across Melbourne

Under open sky

Thirty chairs on the lawn, a eulogy read under the trees, flowers placed by hand. The simplest farewell we arrange, and often the one people remember longest.

A funeral service in an aviation museum hangar, mourners seated beneath a green biplane among vintage aircraft

A Concierge Farewell · An aviation museum hangar

Among the aircraft

He had flown all his life, so we held the service in a hangar, surrounded by the machines that gave him it. A biplane hung over the congregation the whole time.

You don't need to arrive with an idea

Every day on this page started the same way: a conversation, usually about an hour, usually at a kitchen table. We ask about the person rather than about products — the job, the jokes, the Saturdays.

Then we come back to you with the day written out and an estimate beside it. You change whatever you want, as many times as you want, until it sounds like them.

“You actively listened to us and understood what we needed when we didn't have the words or knowledge.”

A congregation stands in a stone parish church as shafts of light fall across the nave toward the coffin

A Celebrated Farewell · Your own parish

In your own church

The pews that knew them for fifty years, your minister, your parish's own order of things. We arrange everything around it, and otherwise stay out of the way.

A long lunch after a service, one table between the vines at a Peninsula winery in late afternoon light

Celebrated or Concierge · Peninsula wine country

The long lunch

A service among the vines, then one long table that runs into the afternoon. For the host who never let a glass sit empty and never let anyone leave early.

Guests filling a beachfront function room at golden hour while a singer, guitarist and cellist perform in front of the sea

Celebrated or Concierge · A room that holds everyone

A life celebrated in full

A grand room, weeks after a private cremation — which gives everyone time to travel and the day time to be planned. Live music, a hundred and fifty guests, standing room only.

A small boat alone on open water offshore, a farewell at sea

A Sea Burial · Offshore

Returned to the sea

No headstone and no plot. Carried out past the heads and given back, whole, to the water — for the one who wanted to go back to the elements he came from.

“Mum felt listened to, the catering was excellent and they even managed to organise a bagpiper from the same regiment.”
