About this venue

Altona Memorial Park was created in 1961 as a different kind of cemetery — floral lawns and memorial gardens rather than rows of headstones — and more than sixty years on, it remains a green haven for families across Melbourne's west. The Chapel of Repose sits at its heart, and it takes the park's idea literally: a white pavilion wrapped around a garden courtyard, where a sculpted steel tree stands beside a living one. Inside, the room is bright and calm beneath a coffered ceiling washed in soft light, and comfortable chairs rather than fixed pews mean the space can be arranged to suit your family. Screens, sound and live streaming are built in for music and tributes, and 80 guests are seated with standing room besides. Refreshment rooms adjoin the chapel foyer for gathering afterwards, and a private cremation or graveside burial can follow within the same grounds.

"Chapel services at Altona are booked in set time slots, as other families may hold services the same day. Most funerals run between 30 minutes and an hour, which sits comfortably within a standard booking — including time for guests to arrive and depart. If you're planning a longer service, with several speakers or particular traditions, tell us early and we'll book extra time so nothing feels rushed. "
Enter the park at 2–14 Dohertys Road, Altona North, and follow the signs to the chapel — it sits near the heart of the park, with parking right beside it. Our team will be there to greet your guests and show them the way.
Please do — it's one of the nicest parts of the chapel. The garden courtyard sits at the centre of the building, ringed by covered walkways, and it's a natural place for guests to gather quietly before the service or take a moment of air afterwards. On a fine day, it's where most people drift.
