About this venue

Some farewells belong in a place that feels like home. Federation Chapel is exactly that — built in the Federation style, all red brick, wraparound verandah and iron lacework, set on a ridge at the highest point of Lilydale Memorial Park with the Yarra Valley and its vineyards beyond. Inside are high ceilings and stained glass, but also the things chapels rarely have: armchairs, an organ, floral blinds, rooms that feel lived in rather than hired. Timber pews seat up to 100 guests with room for 40 more standing — and when a big life draws a big crowd, the rooms either side can carry the service by video-link to as many as 300 people. Sound, screens and live streaming are built in. Afterwards, the Candlebark Room is a short walk away for refreshments, and a private cremation or graveside burial can follow within the same grounds.

Federation Chapel handles big farewells unusually well. The chapel itself seats 100 with standing room for 40 more, and the rooms on either side can carry the service by video-link — up to 300 people in all, under the one roof. The overflow rooms need to be arranged with the cemetery ahead of time, so if your numbers might grow, tell us early and we'll have them booked and ready, just in case.
Please do — the verandah wraps right around the building, and it's one of the loveliest places at the park to stand a while. Guests naturally gather there before the service and drift back afterwards, taking in the view across the valley.
