About this venue

Fawkner Memorial Park has been quietly leading the way for more than a century. It was home to Victoria's first modern crematorium, and when Melbourne's original cemetery closed, the graves of the city's earliest pioneers — including its founder, John Batman — were brought here to rest. The Cordell Chapel carries that history lightly. Recently renovated, its ceiling is the most striking of the park's three chapels: sculpted white planes folding overhead like paper, with light held in the creases. At the front of the room, a tree-of-life triptych glows softly against travertine. Timber pews seat around 140 guests, screens on both walls carry photo and video tributes, and sound, live streaming and a hearing induction loop are built in. Outside, a covered forecourt beneath the gum trees gives guests somewhere to gather before and after. A private cremation or graveside burial can follow within the same grounds.
