The setting

A park the west built for itself

Altona opened in January 1961, and it was a deliberate break from what came before. The trustees of Williamstown Cemetery, running out of room, set out to build something that didn't look like a graveyard — floral lawns and open memorial gardens instead of ranks of headstones, in a part of Melbourne not known for its gardens.

Sixty-five years on, it is exactly that: rose beds, quiet courts and open sky, with wrought-iron gates from Melbourne's 1877 Eastern Market standing at the entrance. It's where the west buries its own. And it holds the whole day — the service, the cremation or burial, and the cup of tea afterwards — without anyone leaving the grounds.

The chapel

One chapel, built around a garden

Altona has a single chapel, and it does everything a farewell needs — with the refreshment rooms adjoining its foyer, so when the service ends the gathering simply begins next door.

The chapel offers live streaming, screens and sound for music and tributes, and a hearing induction loop.

With cremation

After the service, the committal happens quietly and the cremation is carried out on site, in Altona's rebuilt crematorium a few steps from the chapel. If your family wishes to witness, a private viewing room can be arranged. We collect the ashes and return them to you when you're ready.

With burial

From $8,374 (chapel included, grave at cost)

After the service, the procession moves gently across the lawns — the graveside is within the same grounds. Altona is a lawn cemetery, so graves are marked with plaques set into the grass rather than headstones. Grave costs vary by position and whether your family holds an existing grave. We pass them through at cost and quote the exact figure before anything is booked.

Arriving and parking

The main entrance is on Dohertys Road, marked by the park's heritage wrought-iron gates. The chapel, the crematorium and the office all sit close to the entrance, so there's no long drive through the grounds — follow the signs to the Chapel of Repose, and park directly beside it.

Your Candour arranger will be at the chapel well before you arrive, and our team will greet your guests and show them the way.

Getting there

Altona North sits about 20 minutes west of Melbourne's CBD via the West Gate Freeway, and is easily reached from Williamstown, Yarraville, Footscray and the wider west.

Driving is much the easiest way to arrive. If any of your guests can't drive, tell us and we'll help arrange transport for them.

Refreshments after the service

This is the thing Altona does better than almost anywhere: the refreshment rooms adjoin the chapel foyer. There's no drive, no convoy, no gathering awkwardly in a car park. The service ends, the doors open, and everyone is simply together again in the next room.

Catering is arranged on site, from tea, coffee and something to share through to a fuller menu. We book the room, the timing and the food as part of your farewell if you'd like it.

Accessibility

The Chapel of Repose offers step-free entry, wheelchair access and an accessible restroom, with parking directly outside. A hearing induction loop is fitted, so guests with hearing aids can follow the service clearly.

Can everything really happen in one place?

At Altona, more literally than almost anywhere. The service is held in the Chapel of Repose; the crematorium is a few steps away; burials take place across the same lawns; and the refreshment rooms adjoin the chapel foyer, so the gathering begins in the room next door. Nobody drives anywhere between the beginning of the day and the end of it.

Do we need to choose between burial and cremation before we call?

No. Many families haven't decided when they first ring, and some are still weighing it days later. We'll talk through both paths, what each costs at Altona, and what your person or your family would want. Nothing is booked until you're ready.

Can we have a headstone at Altona?

It's worth knowing this early. Altona is a lawn cemetery — graves are marked with plaques set into the grass, with only a limited number of upright headstones. Full monumental graves and mausoleum crypts aren't offered here; within the same trust, they're available at Williamstown and Werribee instead.

For most families the lawns are exactly the point — it's why the park was built this way in 1961. But if a monument matters to you, tell us early and we'll talk through the alternatives before anything is decided.

Can we hold refreshments or a wake at Altona?

Yes, and it's the easiest gathering we arrange anywhere. The refreshment rooms adjoin the chapel foyer, catered on site — from tea, coffee and something to share, through to a fuller menu. When the service ends, everyone simply moves next door.

Can family who can't travel watch the service?

Yes — the Chapel of Repose offers live streaming, and we arrange it as part of the service. Family overseas or interstate receive a private link, and a recording can be kept afterwards for anyone in a difficult time zone. The chapel also has a hearing induction loop, so guests with hearing aids can follow the service clearly in the room.
