The setting

Avenues, not rows

Fawkner was never meant to feel like a graveyard. Charles Heath — surveyor, architect and a believer in the garden cemetery — laid it out in 1906 as wide avenues radiating from a single hub, so that families would walk beneath oaks and elms rather than between rows. It is now the largest memorial park in Victoria.

For thirty-three years mourners arrived here by mortuary train from Flinders Street; the restored carriage still stands beside the tearooms, where families have taken tea after a funeral since 1934. And the park still holds the whole day: the service in one of three renovated chapels, the cremation or burial within the same grounds, and somewhere warm to sit afterwards.

With cremation

After the service, the committal happens quietly and the cremation is carried out on site. Fawkner opened Victoria's first modern crematorium and has cared for cremations here for a century. If your family wishes to witness, a private viewing room can be arranged. We collect the ashes and return them to you when you're ready.

After the service, the procession moves gently along the avenues — the graveside is within the same grounds. Grave costs vary by position and whether your family holds an existing grave, and mausoleum entombment is also available at Fawkner. We pass every cemetery fee through at cost and quote the exact figure before anything is booked.

Getting to Fawkner

Arriving and parking

The main entrance is on Sydney Road, and leads to a roundabout from which the park's avenues radiate outward. Follow the signs to Fourth Avenue — the three chapels sit together at its top, with parking right beside them.

Fawkner is the largest memorial park in Victoria, so allow ten minutes to drive in and park comfortably. Your Candour arranger will be at the chapel well before you arrive, and our team will greet your guests and show them the way.

Getting there

Fawkner sits about 25 minutes north of Melbourne's CBD, straight up Sydney Road, or via CityLink and the Western Ring Road.

By train, Fawkner station on the Upfield line sits at the edge of the park — the same line that once carried mourners out from Flinders Street by mortuary train.

Refreshments after the service

There are two quite different rooms, and families choose by feel.

Inside Fawkner's own grounds, the historic tearooms have been where people sit down together after a funeral since 1934 — a small pavilion from Charles Heath's original plan, standing beside the restored mortuary carriage, serving tea, coffee and light lunches. It suits a close gathering, in a room with a long memory.

Just across Box Forest Road at Northern Memorial Park, the Commemoration Centre is the contemporary choice — two bright rooms, Eden and Tanderra, looking out over the gardens. They seat 80 and 120 on their own, or open into one room for up to 200, with a café and alfresco deck alongside. It's the room for a large farewell, or for a family who'd rather something light and modern.

Both are well used to 40-day services, anniversaries and the food customs of many different communities. Tell us what your family needs and we'll arrange the room, the timing and the catering.

Accessibility

All three chapels offer step-free entry, wheelchair access and accessible restrooms, with parking directly beside them. Each is fitted with a hearing induction loop, so guests with hearing aids can follow the service clearly.

Questions families ask

Can everything really happen in one place?

Yes. The service, the cremation or burial, and the gathering afterwards all happen within Fawkner's grounds. The crematorium is on site — Fawkner opened Victoria's first modern crematorium — and burials and entombments take place within the same park, so there are no processions across town and no splitting of the day.

Do we need to choose between burial and cremation before we call?

No. Many families haven't decided when they first ring, and some are still weighing it days later. We'll talk through both paths, what each costs at Fawkner, and what your person or your family would want. Nothing is booked until you're ready.

How do we choose the right chapel?

Start with your numbers. Crick is the intimate one, seating around 80, so a close gathering fills it warmly rather than rattling around. Joyce and Cordell each seat around 140 — Joyce has glass running down both sides, so the gardens sit at eye level throughout the service; Cordell has a sculpted, folded ceiling and a glowing tree-of-life artwork, and a covered forecourt outside for gathering before and after.

Can we arrange a mausoleum entombment at Fawkner?

Yes. Fawkner was the first cemetery in Australia to introduce grand public mausolea, and remains one of the very few places in Melbourne offering entombment at this scale — including the Holy Family and Holy Angels mausolea.

A chapel service can flow straight into an entombment within the same grounds. We coordinate the crypt, the service and the timing with the cemetery on your behalf.

Can we hold refreshments or a wake at Fawkner?

Yes — and you have a real choice. Fawkner's historic tearooms have hosted families after a funeral since 1934: a pavilion from the cemetery's original plan, standing beside the restored mortuary carriage. It suits a close, unhurried gathering.

For something larger or more contemporary, the Commemoration Centre at Northern Memorial Park sits just across Box Forest Road — two bright garden rooms seating 80 and 120, or one combined room for up to 200, with a café alongside. It's the option families choose when the whole community is coming back after the service.

Both are well used to 40-day services, anniversaries and the food customs of many communities. We book and arrange all of it — the room, the timing and the menu.

Can family who can't travel watch the service?

Yes — every chapel at Fawkner offers live streaming, and we arrange it as part of the service. Family overseas or interstate receive a private link, and a recording can be kept afterwards for anyone in a difficult time zone. Each chapel also has a hearing induction loop, so guests with hearing aids can follow the service clearly in the room.
