The setting

A garden a century in the making

Melbourne has been coming to Springvale since 1901, and a hundred and twenty-five years of care shows. The grounds were renamed a botanical cemetery in 2006 because that's what they had become — 169 hectares of mature trees, still water and the largest memorial rose gardens in Australia, with bunya pines and palms surviving from the very first plantings.

Families return here long after the funeral, to walk among the roses and remember. And on the day itself, the gates hold everything: the service, the cremation or burial, and the cup of tea afterwards, each just a short distance from the last.

Our most straightforward farewell, with clear published pricing. Each path starts from one package price — cemetery and statutory fees passed through at cost, never marked up.

With cremation

After the service, the committal happens quietly and the cremation is carried out on site — Springvale has been caring for cremations since 1905, longer than almost anywhere in Australia. If your family wishes to witness, a private viewing room can be arranged. We collect the ashes and return them to you when you're ready.

With burial

After the service, the procession moves gently within the grounds — the graveside is only ever a few minutes away, among the gardens. Grave costs vary by position and whether your family holds an existing grave. We pass them through at cost and quote the exact figure before anything is booked.

Getting to Springvale

Arriving and parking

Come in from the Princes Highway and follow the blue line painted on the cemetery's internal roads — it leads straight to the chapels. There's a second entrance on Police Road if you're arriving from the north.

Free parking sits beside the reception building and directly across from the chapels. Allow ten minutes to park and walk in comfortably — your Candour arranger will be at the chapel well before you arrive.

Getting there

Springvale sits on the Princes Highway, about 30 minutes south-east of Melbourne's CBD via the Monash Freeway, and around 10 minutes from Dandenong.

By train, Sandown Park and Springvale stations are both close by, with a short taxi or rideshare trip to the gates.

Refreshments after the service

The Clarence Reardon Centre holds seven function rooms a short distance from the chapels, each seating around 50, with rooms combined for larger gatherings.

Catering comes from Café Vita et flores, the cemetery's own licensed café and florist. We book and arrange it all as part of your farewell if you'd like, so it's one less thing to think about.

Accessibility

The chapels and function rooms offer step-free entry, wheelchair access and accessible restrooms, with parking close to every door.

Questions families ask

Can everything really happen in one place?

Yes. The service, the cremation or burial, and the gathering afterwards can all happen within Springvale's grounds. The crematorium is on site — Springvale has cared for cremations since 1905 — and burials take place within the same gardens, so there are no processions across town and no splitting of the day.

Do we need to choose between burial and cremation before we call?

No. Many families haven't decided when they first ring, and some are still weighing it days later. We'll talk through both paths, what each costs at Springvale, and what your person or your family would want. Nothing is booked until you're ready.

How do we choose the right space?

Start with your numbers. Blair and Wilson are the intimate garden chapels at 66 seats each; Renowden seats 96 in restored 1930s tradition; The Atrium holds 100 in a contemporary, light-filled room; and Boyd, the grand original, seats 192.

For the largest farewells, a service in Boyd, Renowden or The Atrium can be shared into the neighbouring rooms, so nobody is left at the door. If you're unsure, tell us who's coming — we'll guide you.

Can we hold refreshments or a wake at Springvale?

Yes. The Clarence Reardon Centre's seven function rooms sit a short distance from the chapels, seating around 50 each, with rooms combined for larger gatherings, and catering by Café Vita et flores — the cemetery's own café and florist. We arrange the room, the timing and the menu as part of your farewell if you'd like.

Can family who can't travel watch the service?

Yes — every one of Springvale's five spaces offers live streaming, and we arrange it as part of the service. Family overseas or interstate receive a private link, and a recording can be kept afterwards for anyone in a difficult time zone. If the farewell includes a graveside service, we can arrange for that to be streamed too — additional costs apply for graveside streaming, and we'll confirm them with you first.
